We’ve been traveling in Chile for almost three months, and without a doubt this has been our best lodging experience. The hostal is perfectly situated in the heart of Bellavista and the open air museum, surrounded by workshops of local artisans. It makes you feel like you are part of a painting. The views from the rooms are lovely… of the city, of the bay, or of the enchanting entrance to the museo cielo abierto. The hostal is a beautifully restored building, tastefully decorated, and immaculate, with a complete kitchen and spacious bedrooms and bathrooms, and a very comfortable sitting and dining area.

But best of all are our hosts, Patricia, Edith, Bernardo, Ricardo, Sara, Elsa, Anna, Rudolfo, and more…an entire Chilean family who speak enough languages among them all, including German, English, Spanish, to make anyone feel at home. They have taken us in and taught us to make empanadas, to dance the tango, and to love Valparaiso. There are not enough words to thank them for sharing the heart of this incredibly unique city.

Gracias a Valparaiso

Avocados, oranges, bouganvilla vines, the sky… their colors bleed from your broken heart and stain your streets.

They run down stacked walls salt-cracked from ocean sobs, shaken by the ripping earth.
The sunlight grins and breaks them into rainbow pieces.

You invite us into your shame, your urine smells, your abandoned dogs, and we laugh together in your dialect, loud and fast. You feed us potatoes still fresh with dirt, sea bass as thick as a fist, and chirimoyas soaked in tears.

We can’t see you unless we see ourselves. We can’t step outside of you because you’ve painted us into your tired body. We are your crooked spine of narrow stairways, your crippled buses struggling uphill. your knotted wires hanging like tousled hair.

At night… when we push against your dark doors to peek inside your heart we can see you dancing the tango like an old painted lady who never learned not to fall in love.
